Introduction

A resume is a written inventory of qualifications, skills and accomplishments submitted to an employer briefly telling who you are, what you know and what you have done. It should serve as an introduction to the employer and does not replace the function of the interview. A carefully prepared resume can be a tangible asset to job seeking - poorly prepared, it can be a serious liability. We discourage use of career objectives as this only serves to limit your scope of usage. The following will serve as a guideline for effective resume preparation.

Outline

Personal Data
Include your name, address, telephone number and email address.

Work History and/or Experience
List (in reverse chronological order) name and location of company, positions held and dates of employment. Include descriptions of specific duties performed, including any special accomplishments.

Education
List formal education including dates of graduation and degrees or certificates received (Post secondary education first, high school last).

Miscellaneous

  • Outline volunteer experience (Should relate to qualifications for position desired.).
  • Indicate special skills.
  • Include advanced training and professional memberships.
  • List your personal strengths.

General Guidelines

  • Be brief, thorough and accurate.
  • Do not date your resume.
  • Do not list references on resume (suggest this be under separate cover and distribute by request only.)
  • Be honest and objective - do not exaggerate.
  • Prepare as a business document - avoid gimmick approaches.
  • Professionally type or have printed on white bond paper.
  • Use proper grammar and check and recheck your spelling.
  • Proofread, proofread and proofread again for typographical errors.
  • Highlight and emphasize your most significant accomplishments.
  • Do not list your reasons for leaving past positions.
  • Do not list salaries on resume.
  • Use action words like "responsible for", "implemented", and "organized" whenever applicable to indicate level of responsibility. Refrain from using "I".
  • Present resume at time of interview... always keep several extra copies with you at all times.
  • If resume must be mailed, include a cover letter of introduction geared towards the position for which you are applying. Have your staffing recruiter review the resume prior to presentation to the prospective employer.
